Kumeu A&P Show 2011
The alpaca section of the Kumeu show this year was spread over 2 days with huacaya on the Saturday and suri on the Sunday. We took 6 suri alpaca on the Sunday and were delighted with the results. We received 3 1st places, a 2nd, a 3rd and a 4th plus Reserve Champion Mid/Dark Fawn and Most Promising Suri Cria.
As well as being split into 2 days, it was a colour schedule this year with Champions awarded for each colour and the Supreme Champion selected from those Colour Champions.
It was a beautiful day and very relaxed as there wasn't the rush to try and get through all the exhibits to finish at a reasonable time. The suri exhibitors present on the Sunday appeared to agree that having huacaya on the Saturday and suri on the Sunday was the best way to split the show over 2 days as many would not have been able to attend if they had needed to be there for both days.
The Most Promising Suri Cria class was also a first for the Kumeu Show. It was lovely to see these beautiful young animals walking into the ring, some with their mothers, and one less than 2 months old. The winner Kandiah Kahurangi is a beautiful honey colour and is out of our solid blue black male Kandiah Jumping Jack. Another of Jack's cria, Haki was 2nd in the junior male mid/dark fawn class. The judge commented that Haki is very small for his age and had therefore been marked down. His size is due to illness when he was young and having to be weaned at 4 months. His fleece is so beautiful that we would like to think that perhaps he would have taken 1st place if only he had been a bit bigger.
